Welcome! The intent of this site is to provide useful information about the piano, while at the same time taking an entertaining and aesthetic look at this great instrument. Included are: care tips, information on tuning, history and trivia, service rates, and a bit about myself. Because the world of pianos has a myriad of topics, I have chosen a few that I feel may be of practical use or interest to the piano owner. "Woman at a Virginal with a Man" painting by seventeenth century Dutch master Jan Vermeer. The virginal is a small harpsichord, with one string per key plucked by a quill. Harpsichords, along with clavichords in which the strings are struck by a brass tangent, heralded the age of the piano-forte. The instrument lying on the floor is a viola da gamba.
Painting by Paul Culiip Most people know me from my 25 years of involvement in the Vermont music scene, not only as a working bassist but also as a visual artist. I play double bass, primarily in the theater and jazz idioms, but am fond of all good music well-performed. My piano tuning work has stemmed from my experience as both an artist and a musician. Listening, ear training and the use of tools and materials are disciplines of mine that apply directly to the piano trade. My vocation has also involved studying with, and working alongside, other professional tuners. I use the Reyburn Cyber Tuner in conjunction with my tuning work. I also provide minor repairs.
A well-tuned and harmonious piano is appreciated by player and listener alike. Conversely, an out-of-tune, unpleasant sounding, neglected piano will discourage its use and can be detrimental to someone trying to learn. Besides maintaining an often valuable investment, keeping the piano maintained and in tune creates a desire to play the instrument and can open the door to the joys of music. The merits of making music are well known, and playing the piano for cultural enrichment, social entertainment, creative expression, or for any number of reasons, is a pastime too often lost in a modern world. Tuning and maintaining these great instruments helps to keep them a part of our everyday lives
